49. Amistad in Connecticut



  1. Trace the fascinating story of the African captives who took over the Amistad on the high seas in their quest for freedom. Start at the New Haven Colony Historical Society, I-91 Exit 3. Then head downtown to the New Haven Green, Center Church and the Amistad Memorial at City Hall. Board an exact replica of the Amistad at Long Wharf, New Haven, its home port.
  2. Travel to Hartford to the 1796 Old State House, I-91 Exit 31 the actual site of the first Amistad trial. Don't miss the Amistad Gallery at the Wadsworth Atheneum just a few blocks down Main Street. Be sure to stay for lunch. Then visit the Harriet Beecher Stowe House (author of Uncle Tom's Cabin) on Farmington Avenue and the Mark Twain House next door.
  3. Take a walk in nearby Farmington, I-84 Exit 39 and see the places marked as historically significant from the days of the Underground Railroad.
